We’re devastated to learn the news of the passing of Lee “Q” O'Denat, the founder of WorldStarHipHop and a great friend and partner of Five All’s. Q launched World Star in 2005, and through relentless hard work built it into one of the premiere hip-hop and urban culture websites in the world.
We first linked up with Q in 2012, when BroBible was acquired by Woven Digital, which at the time also represented WSHH on the advertising front. Q and Doug hit it off immediately, and decided to work together to bring World Star to the big screen. That feature film project is expected to shoot later this year.
Then last fall, a long-gestating idea for a TV show finally came to fruition, and earlier this month, with Q watching just off camera, we shot the first season of “WORLD STAR TV,” which is set to premiere on February 3 at 11 p.m. on MTV2.
Nobody on set was happier to be there than Q. He laughed at every joke told by host Comedian CP and the other comedians on the panel, cheered as guests like Big Sean and Snoop Dogg revealed that World Star is the first site they check ever morning, and celebrated alongside the rest of his loyal WSHH team with a couple bottles of the good stuff... while we were still shooting! After we wrapped on the first episode, Q, the cast, the director, and the showrunner gathered on stage for some celebratory photos, during which Q took a World Star chain off his own neck and hung it around CP’s, a coronation of sorts. It was hard to tell who was prouder in that moment — CP or Q.
When filming resumed the following week, the producers had a surprise for Q — his very own director’s chair, with his name emblazoned on the back. Q loved it, just as he loved meeting and taking photos with all the audience members who couldn’t believe they were in the presence of the man who created WorldStar.
We can’t believe how lucky we were to be in his presence either, and how lucky we were to help bring some of his WorldStar dreams to life.
Thanks so much for everything, Q. And know that your director’s chair will always be there on set, reserved just for you.
One last time from your friends at Five All: WORLD STAR!
